As part of the First Renewables biogas upgrade facility, situated on the same site at Ecogas' Organics Processing Facility in Reporoa, we have commenced construction of a regenerative thermal oxidiser (RTO). The RTO is designed to upgrade the renewable carbon dioxide (bioCo2) that is produced during the biogas to biomethane upgrade process. Once completed the bioC02 will be pumped into a near-by glasshouse encouraging big, delicious tomatoes to grow!
From here, the waste from the glasshouse is fed back into Ecogas' anaerobic digesters, which in turn is sent to our upgrade facility to produce more biomethane and bioCO2. This is a great example of a true circular economy in action!
How does bioCO2 help tomatoes grow?
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an essential component of photosynthesis (also called carbon assimilation). Photosynthesis is a chemical process that uses light energy to convert CO2 and water into sugars in green plants. These sugars are then used for growth within the plant, through respiration. The use of CO2 will give about a 20% increase in production.
