Taranaki waka ama crew

Funding from Firstgas, part of Clarus has helped a Taranaki waka ama crew take on some of the world’s best at the International Va’a Federation World Sprint Championships in Singapore.

The crew competed in the Master Women’s 40-50 age group division in a W12 event at the championships in August, representing Taranaki on the international stage. They qualified for this world event having been awarded a silver medal at the National Sprint Championships held at lake Karapiro in January 2026.

After a fast and fiercely contested opening heat, the crew finished a close third, narrowly missing one of the two automatic qualifying places for the final.

They were back on the water the following day for the repechage, where another nail-biting race saw them finish third again, just missing out on a place in the final.

While initially disappointed, the crew had plenty to be proud of, finishing the championships ranked ninth in the world in their category.

Team member, Karina Hill says the support they received from Firstgas, alongside their friends and whānau, helped make the journey to Singapore possible.

“We fully appreciate all the support from our friends and whānau, which allowed us to train with total commitment, plus the financial sponsorship which assisted hugely with relieving pressures and ultimately making our journey to Singapore to compete possible.

“We represented you with pride, dedication and positivity.”

Through our Clarus Community Fund, Firstgas is proud to have supported the crew as they represented Taranaki on the world stage and congratulates them on an impressive international result!
