Energy is what we do, but it’s people we do it for

Energy is what we do, but it’s people we do it for – our customers and ourselves, the people who work for Clarus’ businesses. Without energy, life as we know it would grind to a halt. We take this responsibility seriously, seeking to ensure that we play our part in safely, reliably, and affordably delivering on the country’s energy needs. We’re proud of the important role we play in Kiwis’ lives.

We’re one of New Zealand’s largest energy groups, with businesses that touch many parts of the energy supply chain – from energy transmission and distribution to retail supply and even storage.

Our businesses have offices nationwide and we care about and contribute to the communities we’re a part of.

Today we’re energy experts, using our collective knowledge and experience to advocate for the industry and lead conversations about its future – New Zealand’s future. We’re leading change beyond the mandatory by actively researching, innovating and investing in future fuels to drive decarbonisation.

Our purpose

Deliver good energy for a brighter Aotearoa
Kia tika te pūngao a Aotearoa

At Clarus, we don't just deliver energy - we deliver good energy by:

  • Delivering natural gas, LPG, and electricity across New Zealand through our robust network of pipelines, LPG delivery systems, and power transmission lines.
  • Ensuring reliable and safe energy that powers homes and businesses.
  • Investing in future energy solutions to meet tomorrow's needs.
  • Bringing positive energy to our workplace, community and stakeholder interactions.

Our commitment to good energy goes beyond the physical product, encompassing our people, how we operate, innovate, and engage with our community.

Our name Clarus represents clarity, brightness, and strength. Everything we do is for a Brighter Aotearoa. Making a difference for Aotearoa and acknowledging Te Ao Māori and the communities we serve.

The translation of our Purpose in our Te Reo Māori means:

Kia Tika - Kia doing or getting something, Tika - correct or right. Te pūngao - Pūngao captures energy overall. As well as energy required for growth, change, prosperity. Can also capture people, community, places and things needed to deliver energy. And a Aotearoa - acknowledgement of Te Ao Māori and the communities we serve.

Our mission

Deliver safe, reliable and cleaner energy today and in the future, doing right by our environment, people and communities.
Mō te taiao, ngā kaimahi, ngā hapori hoki

We work to ensure we do right by our environment, our people, and our communities. We believe in ethical practices and integrity in everything we do. By aligning ourselves with our Employee Value Proposition (EVP) and adhering to Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) policies, we work hard to stay connected with our communities and stakeholders. We aim for positive outcomes that reflect our values and commitment to our team and the world around us.

We are taking action to deliver safe, reliable and cleaner energy now and for the future with examples including:

  • Building our electricity distribution business (EDB), through acquisition of Firstlight Network (New Zealand EDBs deliver largely renewable electricity throughout the country).
  • Developing a renewable gas project in Reporoa, with integration into a section of our transmission network expected in late 2024.
  • Developing a trial for blending renewable hydrogen into a section of our gas distribution network.
  • Working with our joint venture partner Harmony Energy to develop one of New Zealand's largest solar farms, with a final investment decision expected later in 2024.
  • Setting emission reduction targets for our business processes and working to deliver against those targets.

The sentence structure in our Te Reo Māori Mission Statement follows traditional convention where the enduring whenua (land) comes before the more transitional tangata (people).
