Key Presenters

Dr. Jeff Sutherland is the co-creator of Scrum, and was a original signatory of the Agile Manifesto, which marked the start of the Agile movement.

Dr. Sutherland has been a Scrum consultant to Microsoft, Oracle, Palm, Yahoo, Ariba, Cadence, and Adobe in Silicon Valley. His recent Google Tech Talk helped Google teams evaluate and extend their Scrum implementation on the revenue generating Google AdWords project. He has served as VP of Engineering or CTO at eleven software companies, managing the last seven entirely using Scrum, and achieved industry-leading, hyper-productive results. Dr. Sutherland is the Chairman of the Scrum Training Institute.

Dr. Sutherland is also an expert in distributed/outsourced Scrum and CMMI Level Scrum. His 2006 publication on distributed Scrum documented the highest performance software development project ever recorded for systems over 1,000,000 lines of code completed by SirsiDynix in the U.S. and Exigen Services in Russia.

He has been working exclusively with Agile software development teams since 2001 and has worked with clients such as QPass, Microsoft, Capital One, Progressive, and TransCanada Pipelines. Kane believes that learning is most effective if done through a combination of exercises, games, and discussion. He has constructed his training materials to provide an educational but still enjoyable course.

Kane is also experienced in guiding organizations that are transitioning to an Agile organization. This includes preparing senior management and business partners for changes resulting from the introduction of Scrum.

Prior to his work with Agile software development, Kane had 15 years of experience as a developer and project manager for Waterfall and RUP projects working with Java, Smalltalk, C, SQL and PL/SQL. Kane's recent technical interests have turned towards Ruby primarily because of its similarlity to Smalltalk.

Courses

Certified Scrum Master

This two-day ScrumMaster Certification course provides everything you need to get started with Scrum. On completion, participants are eligible to take an exam which allows them to be registered as Certified ScrumMasters (CSMs), which includes a one-year membership in the Scrum Alliance, where valuable ScrumMaster materials and information are available exclusively to CSMs.

This course will introduce the essential concepts and tools of Scrum. Participants will learn how to lead development teams towards agile operations by managing product backlogs, planning releases and sprints, tracking and reporting progress, and conducting retrospectives. Exercises, case studies, and examples are interwoven throughout the course to illustrate the principles being taught... [read more]

Certified Scrum Product Owner

This intensive two-day Product Owner certification course provides everything you need to be an effective customer to a Scrum team. You will learn the essential concepts and tools of Scrum from a Product Owner’s (Business Owner’s in traditional project management world) perspective. It will address how your particular role as a business customer will change when interacting with Agile teams.

Participants will learn how to effectively manage all aspects of a product owner's involvement in an Agile project: the requirements process, writing user stories, estimating, tracking, release planning, reporting, forecasting, scaling, and so on.

The course approach is based on a combination of lecture, discussion, and team-based hands-on exercises to both explain and demonstrate through time-tested best-practices what it takes to fill the shoes of this integral role on an Agile team... [read more]

Writing Effective User Stories Workshop

Effective user stories are the cornerstone of successful agile projects. In this intensive half-day course, you will explore what a user story is, learn how to write effective user stories, and experience how to manage your requirements in an agile fashion.

The course is an interactive, hands-on workshop that utilizes a combination of presentation, discussion, and hands-on exercises to both explain and demonstrate the core aspects of working with user stories [read more]

Testing on Agile Projects Workshop

Testing is a crucial part of any software development process. Teams that have been schooled in the "throw it over the fence" mentality often struggle when considering how to apply testing best practices in the Agile world. How to we test during constant change? What should we test? What do we do while the developers are writing code? If we are using test driven development and continuous integration, are we needed at all?

This intensive half-day workshop is designed for software testing professionals and Agile managers who need to understand testing in the Agile paradigm. It is a hands-on workshop that utilizes a combination of lecture, discussion, and hands-on exercises to both explain and demonstrate software testing best-practices in an Agile team [read more]

Scrum Alternatives

This workshop will survey alternative agile frameworks and processes, and focus on Kanban - the new kid on the block. Kanban is a tool borrowed from lean manufacturing and applied to software development. It dynamically exposes constraints in the flow of work, and enables teams to respond quickly, maximising throughput and value-add to the customer. Kanban is rapidly gaining momentum in agile teams around the world.

Other processes covered will include XP, Crystal Methods, and Feature-Driven Development. This is an interactive workshop comprised of presentation, discussion, and hands-on exercises. Familiarity with Scrum will be useful but not mandatory [read more].

An Introduction to Test Driven Development (TDD)

Learning how to write more effective tests is an excellent way to write better designed, more maintainable and more reliable code. It also helps keep development focused on the real requirements, resulting in a higher quality product for the end user. This is a skill that every developer needs to master [read more].

Fundamentals of Continuous Integration

Continuous Integration is a fundamental best practice of modern software development. In this course, you will learn how to set up an effective Continuous Integration environment that will reduce integration issues, improve code quality, and improve communication and collaboration between team members. You will also learn how Continuous Integration can act as a communications hub for your development team [read more].
